If your really serious, there as some decent AEG's (automatic Electric Gun's) available for less than a hundred squid from places like Airsoft Scotland and Airsoft Skirmish. These guns are top notch and well worth a look at overthe more overpriced models.
After that I'd pick up a few pieces of cheap camoflague (eBay or even an exarmy shop will do for these).
But before all that, I'd recommend renting out from SYA, they'll kit you up for pittance.

For your first weapon I'd suggest electric, much more reliable and not affected by the temperature as much. When are you thinking of having your first game? If your renting they pretty much provide you with everything you need. Do need some good boots though.

Sorry, meant to type the 13th. Whens your next outing after that.
And another noob question, forgive me, but when sites refer to their products as "TM" or "as good as TM" what are they on about.
And cheers for the heads up on those sites they are pretty good.

TM = Tokyo Marui
Its an airsoft manufacture. Cheapsoft versions of their guns are priced how TMs should be priced. Classic Army make better quality guns but you'd be spending a bit more so it depends on your budget really.
Our next outting after the 13th will be the weekender balance of power. That might be a little extreme for your first airsoft game though.

Well you won't beable to rent kit for the weekender so you'd have to buy all your own stuff before hand. Best to come down and have a look on an open day before you buy anything expensive (imo)

Nothing wrong with Tokyo Marui mate. The guns they build are fine and their hop ups are far superior to the Classic Army types. I wouldn't recommend a Classic Army gun as a first. The reason the Chinasoft guns are so good is because as has been stated, they Tokyo Marui clones...
